Poly[(vinyl methyl ether)‐ co ‐(vinyl alcohol)]s were synthesized from poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(vinyl alcohol) by a new simple method based on the well‐known Williamson reaction. The influence of the type of the alkylating agent and the reaction conditions on the efficiency of the methylation was investigated. A series of copolymers with different molecular weight and degree of alkylation were prepared and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behaviour of their aqueous solutions was evaluated by measuring the cloud‐point temperatures ( T cp ).
