Silicon‐containing polymers with definite chemical structure were synthesized by reaction of silanes with compounds having multiple bonds (polyaddition) and with water (polycondensation), and by ring‐opening reactions of silacyclobutane or butene derivatives (ring‐opening polymerization). Various optically pure organosilicon compounds were synthesized or separated by HPLC, and stereoregular polycarbosilanes, polycarbosiloxanes and polysiloxanes were synthesized from these compounds used as monomers. Stereochemistry of the elementary reactions producing stereoregular polymers was elucidated. Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry
