Many years of development of lasers have led to a range of sophisticated devices with considerable versatility. Now major developments are taking place in miniaturisation of lasers, in the form of diode‐lasers, lasers pumped by diode‐lasers, optical fibre lasers, planar waveguide lasers etc., where the same versatility and sophistication can now be obtained in compact and integrated form.
