Abstract Plenarvortrag 40. Physikertagung 1976 in Bonn. Most of the cosmic X‐ray sources so far discovered are probably powered by accretion into neutron stars or black holes. Recent observations and their theoretical implications are reviewed. These observations provide important clues to many fundamental problems.
