Indirect adaptive control of the pressure of an extruder for melt spinning processes was investigated. The controller was a proportional‐integral‐derivative. (PID) one. An identified model for the pressure system was determined by using weighted least‐squares estimation with an adjustable Identification interval. On‐line tuning of the PID controller based on the identified model was then carried out. Difficulties in determining the proper model and controller tuning were avoided. The experiment, carried out with a pilot‐type melt spinning machine, resulted in higher quality fiber production.
