An unconditionally stable explicit finite difference numerical scheme is used to determine the pressure distribution during the packing stage of a rectangular mold cavity. Different initial conditions arising from both an isothermal and nonisothermal mold filling analysis are considered in relation to subsequent packing behavior. The packing stage is of short duration, may be assumed to be isothermal, and gives rise to a more uniform pressure distribution within the mold cavity.
