As an example of a complex process, the production of blown film is analyzed. Systems descriptions are used to emphasize the importance of stating objectives clearly before process modelling. The mathematical treatment of confined and free flows is outlined, together with an account of the factors which are important in polymer melt flow. The uses and limitations of mathematical modelling are discussed briefly.
