A “milling viscosity” test has been developed which measures the roll‐separating forces encountered during milling of experimental compound formulations on a carefully set‐up and controlled laboratory two‐roll mill. A small 8‐in. x 16‐in. laboratory mill was equipped with force‐measuring dynamometers and used to explore the actions of different vinyl‐resin compounds. The instrument has proven to be useful in developing thermoplastic materials, in providing an index for predicting the tendency of a material to deflect calender rolls, and as an aid in estimating the forces which may be encountered in full‐size equipment.
