Narrowleaf cottonwood ( Populus angustifolia ). In this issue, Bayliss et al. demonstrate that genetic variation in this foundational North American tree species underpins geographic variation in atmosphere‐plant‐ecosystem feedbacks, through local adaptation of populations to landscape hydrologic functioning. The authors discuss the implications of these relationships for our understanding of ecohydrological processes and the impacts of drought. Photo credit: Mason Brock (Public Domain).
