Medicago sativa subsp. falcata – a close relative of cultivated alfalfa. In their timely review, Singer et al. explore our current understanding of the impacts that elevated carbon dioxide concentrations have on leguminous species, which includes many crops. Legume responses to increasing carbon dioxide concentrations are complex but understanding them is essential for current legume breeding programs aimed at protecting and enhancing yields under global environmental change.
