The new understanding of type 2 diabetes is essential for health care professionals to appreciate. It is a simple condition of accumulation of more fat than an individual's body can cope with. Losing around 15% of body weight reverses the underlying processes that caused the diabetes provided that the condition has not been present for too many years. If weight regain is avoided, long‐term remission is possible. This is good news for people with type 2 diabetes. Copyright © 2020 John Wiley & Sons.
