There have been many changes in the management of type 1 diabetes since the last NICE guidelines in 2004. These have included the development of a wider range of analogue insulins, improvements in technology for blood glucose monitoring and insulin delivery, and interest in therapies other than insulin for treatment. Despite these new developments, people with type 1 diabetes still have a reduced life expectancy of 11–13 years.1 New NICE guidance (NG17) published in August2 sets out to change our practice, with evidence-based practice to improve glycaemic control and reduce the complications of diabetes while working in a cost effective way.
