Two patients undergoing amniocentesis are described in which the resulting amniotic fluid was unavoidably bloodstained. The results suggest that it may be beneficial in such cases to reserve a small volume of bloodstained liquor for culture with phytohaemagglutinin since the presence of a few fetal lymphocytes can lead to a prenatal diagnosis within 72 h.
