A new bioautographic assay suitable for the localisation of β ‐glucosidase inhibitors present in a complex matrix is described. Enzyme activity was detected using esculin as the substrate to produce esculetin, which reacts with ferric ion to form a brown complex. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
