New composite materials composed of ι‐carrageenan and polymeric ionic liquids were prepared by in situ polymerization of ionic liquids having polymerizable acrylateand vinyl benzyl groups using 2,2′‐azobis(isobutyronitrile) as an initiator. The FTIR and CP‐MAS 13 C NMR data confirmed the formation of the composites composed of the two components. Effective miscibility and occurrence of ionic exchanges among the components during the formation of the composites were further estimated by employing some analytical tools. The composites were found to have good mechanical properties under compressive mode. Furthermore, the electrical conductivities of the composites were summarily measured, which were comparable to semiconductors. POLYM. COMPOS., 2010. © 2009 Society of Plastics Engineers
