The incidence of early stromal invasion in apparently non-invasive papillary carcinomas of the bladder has been investigated, using methenamine silver/periodic acid-Schiff stains (MS/PAS). It is shown that where there is some difficulty in making this assessment in haematoxylin and eosin stained sections, MS/PAS stains are helpful. It has also been shown that three of 44 non-invasive tumours show evidence of invasion at deeper levels in the paraffin block. Finally, contrary to expectations, the presence or absence of invasion could not be used as an indication of subsequent behaviour.
