Isotactic poly‐1‐butene was melt blended with montmorillonite modified with di‐methyl di‐hydrogentallow ammonium ion. Maleic anhydride grafted poly(propylene) or poly(ethylene‐co‐vinylacetate) were used as compatibilizers. Thermal and fire retardant behavior of the polymer matrix were enhanced by the attitude of clay to form a thermally stable protecting physical barrier on the surface of the decomposing polymer material.
