Abstract Magnesia‐supported poly‐γ‐aminopropylsiloxane–ruthenium complex catalysts (MgO‐NH 2 ‐Ru) have been prepared by a very simple method and have been found to be capable of catalyzing the hydrogenation of some simple carboxylic acids, such as acetic acid, propionic acid, lactic acid and isobutyric acid to give ethanol, propanol, 1,2‐propanediol and isobutyl alcohol in 100% yields respectively in the presence of water at 240 °C and under 5.0 × 10 6 Pa H 2 for 18 h. The catalyst was very stable and could be used repeatedly without any noticeable changes in its catalytic activity. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
