Ring‐opening polymerization of γ‐stearyl L ‐glutamate N ‐carboxyanhydride (SLGNCA) was performed with a multifunctional porphyrin initiator, meso‐tetrakis(4‐aminophenyl) porphyrin (TAPP), to produce a novel porphyrin‐containing polypeptide. It was found that the yield and intrinsic viscosity of the obtained polymer (PSLG/TAPP) was mainly effected by the initial ratio of SLGNCA to TAPP. The polypeptide was extensively characterized by visible absorption spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), 1 H ‐NMR and IR techniques. It was clarified that the polypeptide has a four‐arm branched structure with a porphyrin core. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
