Zinc borates function as flame retardant, smoke suppressant, afterglow suppressant, and anti‐tracking agent in both halogen‐containing and halogen‐free polymers. This paper will review 35 years of historical development and recent advances in the use of these multifunctional fire retardants in electrical/electronic, transportation, and building product applications. In addition, the use of zinc borates as polymer additives for non‐flame retardant applications will also be briefly reviewed. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
