We compare two approaches for the efficient implementation of the mixed finite element method with applications for elliptic problems, like single phase flow, and hyperbolic problems, like the wave equations. We briefly explain the hybrid and the multipoint flux mixed finite element method (MFMFE) and conduct a comparison of the two methods in terms of efficiency.
