Abstract Every manufactured hydropower rotor shows some degree of unbalance and other imperfections that cause vibrations. In this contribution, a non‐linear dynamic model is used to calculate the lateral vibrations of vertical rotors in hydropower units due to generator unbalance and coupling misalignment. The vibrations are analyzed and distinguishing features are identified. Using the identified features, it is possible to diagnose the vibration cause from vibrational data for the described model. This can be done even when some model parameters like bearing properties are not known with high accuracy.
