Abstract This paper studies a single crystal subjected to anti‐plane shear‐controlled load reversal within the thermodynamic dislocation theory. Numerical simulations of the governing equations demonstrate the size‐dependent kinematic hardening and the Bauschinger effect. Both are caused by the excess dislocations.
