The effect of sudden amplitude changes of a spanwise traveling surface wave on turbulent boundary layers is investigated numerically using high resolution large‐eddy simulation (LES). The results show drag reduction of up to 9 percent and an adaptation of the turbulent flow to the changed input parameter within 100 convective times. (© 2017 Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
