This work presents numerical methods used for predicting crack paths in technical structures based on the theory of linear elastic fracture mechanics. The FE‐method is used in combination with an efficient remeshing algorithm and a post processor to calculate crack tip loading. The interaction of cracks and internal boundaries and interfaces is investigated. (© 2012 Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
