Lightweight construction plays an important role in the global task to save energy. A common approach to reduce the weight of structures is the use of composite materials like fibre reinforced polymers (FRP). FRP can be characterised by transversely isotropic material behaviour, a special case of anisotropy. In our arcticle we present the necessary efforts to include such material behaviour into an existing adaptive FEM code. (© 2011 Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
