In order to validate nonlinear dynamic process models, parameters have to be estimated from experimental data. The method of nonlinear optimum experimental design can improve the statistical reliability of parameter estimates drastically. This article discusses the problem formulation, numerical solution approaches and application strategies for nonlinear experimental design optimization problems. (© 2011 Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
