We are concerned with an interior penalty method for an optimal control problem with an elliptic PDE constraint and additional pointwise constraints on the gradient of the state variable. We will derive an estimator that gives qualitative information about the error in the cost functional due to the interior penalty parameter and for the discretization of the PDE.
