We study the systematic development of subgrid closures via transparent boundary conditions in spectral space in one of the simplest possible settings: passive tracer transport in a doubly–periodic shear flow that has small support in the spectral domain. The resulting closure schemes have small dissipation rate errors and are only minimally over–dissipative for unsteady flows. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
