The efficient simulation of textile reinforced composites requires reliable material parameters describing the macroscopic material behavior. Due to the micro–structure, decoupled tensile and bending stiffnesses are observed in experimental investigations. This motivates the use of higher order continuum theories. For numerical simulation of this material behavior, the formulation and application of a volume element based on the Cosserat continuum theory is presented. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
