In the present contribution, the buckling problem of compressively loaded symmetrically laminated orthotropic composite plates with free reinforced edges is studied [1]. Starting from the exact transcendental elasticity solution of the problem, a straightforward criterion for the determination of the minimum bending stiffness EI min of the edge stiffeners is presented that allows for the determination of EI such that no global buckling of the plate and flange occurs.
