The geometrical approach for curve–to–curve interaction is considered in a specially defined local coordinate system related to the contacting curve. This coordinate system is defined following the closest point projection (CPP) procedure in which two nearest contact points are defined correspondingly on both curves. The iterative numerical algorithm is then formulated in this coordinate system and all necessary parameters are derived in a covariant form. This leads to a contact description which is applicable for contact between curved beams and cables as well as for contact between surface edges. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
