We study infinite–dimensional descriptor systems with the property of input–output–passivity, that is, the Lebesgue inner product of input and output has positive real part. A sufficient criterion for passivity, is given in terms of a certain operator inequality generalizing the Kalman–Yakubovich–Popov inequality. We furthermore characterize passivity in the frequency domain. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
