Rapid perturbations of the boundaries of an overmoded cavity for acoustic or electromagnetic fields cause nonstationary effects of the stochastic properties of the field. The associated Langevin–Itô and Fokker–Planck equations for the energy density and field amplitude are derived. Analytic solutions for the field magnitude and energy density are obtained, showing that the field dynamics can be characterized as a generalized diffusion process.
