The dynamic behaviour of a tyre tread block is described by a modularly arranged model. Special emphasis is laid on the influence of the force‐displacement characteristic between rubber and the rough surface. In the simulation the rough surface on which the tread block slides is modelled as smooth with the friction characteristic of the respective material pairing and a non‐linear description of the local tyre/road interaction. This leads to an adequate description of the contact partners without losing numerical efficiency. Furthermore the model considers wear that changes the block geometry and thus the vibrational behaviour. With the presented model of a tyre tread block dynamic effects like friction induced vibrations are simulated. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
