In this contribution we show how the discrete element method (DEM) can be applied to model cohesive materials which exhibit ductile behaviour by introducing connective elements that can bear a certain load. The modelled material is verified by simulating a orthogonal cutting process which is compared to experimental results. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
