This paper is devoted to the description of a higher order finite volume scheme for the 2D shallow water equation with a specific focus on a complex phosphor cycle describing processes in lakes and rivers. The scheme guarantees the unconditional positivity and mass conservation of respectively modelled quantities, which are crucial properties for meaningful computed results in biochemical contexts. It works on secondary unstructured meshes which enables the application to arbitrary complex geometries. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
