We introduce a Bayesian signal restoration method which extracts jumps from a periodical signal. The maximum a posterior estimate of the model problem equals to a minimiser of a functional that Γ‐converges to the Mumford‐Shah functional. Furthermore, the behaviour of the approximative model in the infinite‐dimensional limit is discussed in more detail. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
