The treatment of a pathogenic disease process can be modeled as an optimal control problem with time‐delays in several state variables. The resulting system describes the innate immune response and consists of both ordinary differential equations and delay differential equations, where the delay is constant but disease specific. In this paper the numerical treatment and the optimal solution are discussed. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
