This contribution gives an introduction to time‐frequency analysis. A comparison of the basic principles of linear timefrequency analysis explains, in what kind of applications the short‐time fourier transform (STFT) is superior to wavelet transforms. Subsequently, the STFT is performed on signals of mechanical and medical origin to illustrate its potential with regard to vibration analysis. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
