For numerous problems in science and engineering a refined modelling approach leads to initial‐boundary value problems for partial differential‐algebraic equations (PDAEs). A perturbation index of the variational formulation of the PDAE is introduced. As examples, the compressible Navier–Stokes equations and a model problem from MHD are considered.
