The rapid progress in fabrication and utilizing of microelectromechanical systems during the last decade has reinforced the need of a more detailed understanding of the fluid behavior in small volumes. Our investigation focuses on the fluid behavior in a small vertical gap when applying a temperature gradient and using a 30% and 60% glycerin/water solution. Liquid crystals are used to measure simultaneously velocity and temperature distributions. The technique is explained and selected results are presented. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
