Velocity vector field of a synthetic jet has been investigated experimentally. The synthetic jet is generated by an electrodynamical system designed for control of a free shear layer. To catch unsteady periodical structures the phase average method is applied to time series of instantaneous velocities. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
