Application of a polymer on a substrate, e. g. a metal sheet, generates a boundary layer in the polymer. In this boundary layer the properties of the polymer differ from the bulk properties. In the present contribution a mechanical theory based on a structural parameter is presented that allows for the existence of such interphases and, therefore, leads to effective material properties depending on the thickness of the layer.
