For any linear partial differential equation the solving functions are such ones that satisfy the equation and form a complete set of functions. In the paper the heat polynomials (i.e. solving functions for the heat conduction equation) are discussed as a representative example. They are used to construct an approximate solution of a given problem in a form of linear combination of the polynomials.
