Abstract The mechanical model and the equations of motion of a rapid long‐term coiling process are presented. Additional effects are considered in the mechanical model in extension of the simple Laval‐rotor. Due to the coiled material the outer radius and the stiffness of the coiling drum varies with the rotation angle. The variable mass of the rotor has an important influence upon the oscillations of the rotor. Additionally, for the mechanical system under consideration, the resulting oscillations due to a variable eccentricity are analyzed. For the solution of the dynamic system an extended Newmark‐method is applied with a time‐step, which guarantees a converged solution. Numerical studies are performed for various parameters in order to highlight the influence of variable mass and variable eccentricity.
