For the geometric alignment of image data we propose spline‐based schemes utilizing anatomical point landmarks. We have developed three different types of elastic registration approaches which have different properties and thus differ w.r.t. their suitability for certain registration applications. All approaches are both computationally efficient and can be applied for multimodal images. Our approaches have been successfully applied for the registration of 2D and 3D tomographic images of the human brain.
