In India, microfinance institutions (MFIs) have made an impressive contribution in achieving the financial inclusion. However, the peculiar features of MFI lending—the uncollateralized small amount loans—raise doubts on their outreach and targeting that whether the poor are really being served. This study based on a primary survey ascertains that mere financial inclusion does not guarantee poverty outreach in the context of India.
