Educational linkages are an important source of foreign aid to Asian countries. In this first of two articles, the authors' experiences with such a project form the background for a discussion of the factors that contributed to the outcome of the project: partner selection, strategic planning, balancing flexibility and accountability, and coping with differences in culture and values. Key concepts of ‘international development’ and ‘sustainability’ are introduced. In the second article, the focus is on curriculum development and implementing educational standards of the World Federation of Occupational Therapy (WFOT). The information and experiences shared in these articles may be useful to those embarking on similar projects.
