The use of smartphones, tablets, and other mobile computer systems; the rise in the implementation of business transactions (e.g., e‐commerce, e‐government); and the digitalization of data all advance the need for the constant upgrading of data networks. The data rates still continue to increase significantly – almost exponentially – worldwide every year [1]. Only by applying fiber optic technology in all areas can these future tasks be carried out reliably and satisfactorily. For the first fiber optics symposium to be held in Germany in several years, we will provide you with a brief overview of the current trends of and developments in fiber optic technology for data transmission. The symposium will take place in Olching on December 7, 2017.
